Eldership Question?

If the children of an elder goes astray after he/she leaves home, does that "disqualify" him from serving as an elder?

A man either qualities or does not qualify to hold the office of an Elder I Tim 3 and Titus 1. Just because a man may qualify at one point in his life does not mean he will always qualify. I knew a man who was at one time an Elder in a digressive church. at one point his children left the church, and he realized he no longer qualified, so he resigned. In other places some congregations may want to have Elders so badly that they "ordain" those who are unqualified. This does not make them actual Elders, even though their home congregations, and others may recognize them as such.

A home congregation must determine each qualification in line with the scriptures for each person being considered for the office of an Elder. On one hand we can force the qualifications to be so strict that no one can qualify. But on the other hand to be an Elder he must be scripturally qualified. Again, it is the responsibility of the home congregation (not outsiders) to be able to accept one as an Elder. The congregation answers to God and not to man.

The Bible and common since teaches that your "children" will always be your "children." There are numerous Bible examples that children are to honor their father and mother throughout their lives. When one leaves home that does not relieve them of this responsibility. Note as an example; Jesus "honored" His Heavenly Father throughout his life on earth (as a child and adult). John 8:49

Throughout the scriptures (both new and old testaments) a father and mother always remain the children’s parents and children are to honor them throughout their lives. (Mark 7:10, Matthew 15:4, Ephesians 6:2, Deuteronomy 5:16, John 8:49, Exodus 20:12, Matthew 19:19, Malachi 1:6, Mark 10:19)

In regard to a father and mother, one of the most heart breaking dishonorable actions of a child is to leave the Church. This would disqualify a man in becoming an Elder.

Note in the next 2 scriptures it states that "men" (adult people) are condemned for being "disobedient" to parents:

    2Timothy 3:2-5
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (King James)

    Romans 1:28-32
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (King James)

Now after considering the scriptures, it would be a huge stretch of the imagination to state "If the children of an elder goes astray after he/she leaves home" keeps an Elder qualified. He no longer is qualified.

    Titus 1:6
An elder must be blameless. He must be the husband of one wife and have children who are believers and who are not accused of having wild lifestyles or of being rebellious. (International Standard)
