Brother Alton Bailey and others have gone to great lengths to find people who could provide us with a suitable communion cup and plate set.  With the approval of Alton, we have set up information about communion sets on our site, and anyone interested may order here.  Alton sent us information on a supplier he recommends ...and we are looking for other suppliers, as well as better prices.  (There are not a lot out there to choose from who are suitable for our needs.)

High quality silverplated is as follows:

24-28oz cup/lid/plate
one handle  $685
two handles  $754
(20 year warranty ~ Picture shown below)
Also pictures filled with grape juice (click picture to enlarge)...

  16 oz
  24 oz
  28 oz
  28oz

32-36oz cup/lid/plate
one handle  $745
two handles  $815
(20 year warranty ~ Picture shown below)

All of the above have a very nice "dripless" rim feature that helps prevent grape juice from dripping down the outside of the cup.  It has a "dripless" feature, but does not have the curled rim that is hard to clean.

You can also special order the above in sterling silver, but the price is very high--about $3,000 for the 36oz set.  This company also repairs and re-plates old silver cups/plates for about half the prices shown above.

Medium quality silverplated cup and plate:
(another manufacturer)
16-18oz cup/plate (no handle & no lid)  each with decorative grape motif   $375

Low quality silverplated cup and plate (they are smaller and range from $19 to $200).
Would not recommend... still searching.

We are also looking into other sources in Mexico where a silversmith (now retired) once made a few cups for brethren here in the United States (cost around $200) ...but there were a few complaints from brethren using them who say they have a metallic taste. We are trying to see if this problem can be corrected and still receive comparable pricing.  Both Bill Verner and Juan Rodriguez, Jr. have been a good help with this effort.

Almost all silver cups on the market are too small for our use, but we are looking internationally for other sources as well as custom silversmiths.  Many have searched extensively, but if anyone can help us find a high quality cup suitable for the Lord's Supper at a better price, please let us know.

Of course, a sterling silver or silverplated cup is not scripturally required... the requirement is "A Cup" (cup:  POTÉRION ...a cup, a drinking vessel, with or without handles)  I am told that most  third world countries use a tin cup on the Lord's Table, some use porcelain, glass, etc..

In the future, we hope to provide a direct order form, but for now, you may contact me to place an order.

Cleaning and Caring for Silver Communion Set

Manufacturers state it is best not to use any type of abrasive cleaning supplies on silver (not even baking soda).  It is best to use common dishsoap and water, and then rinse thoroughly.  Completely dry with cloth towels, not paper.

Manufacturers say it is not a problem to place grape juice in the cup before services (an hour or so), but it is not good to leave grape juice in the cup overnight because it will eventually eat away the silverplating and then the metal frame.

The manufacturer of the above-pictured communion set recommends Hagerty's Silver Polish  when the set becomes tarnished.

The above-pictured communion set is copper based with silverplating.  Copper is also a standard metal used for tubing lines for drinking water.  Some silver cups have other softer and toxic based framing, and if the silverplating ever wears off or is mixed with a thin plating of silver, you will notice a bitter metallic taste, and this could be toxic, even with traces of lead.  This is another reason we are recommending the above-pictured high quality communion set with a 20-year warranty.

PS... Please note also that there are congregations in areas that could use your old cup and plate (even if it is in very poor condition).  We have volunteers who are willing to help pay for the repairs and then donate the cups to needy congregations.

+PS...We are also working on best prices for ordering pure grape juice (without additives) for both the U.S. and foreign fields.  Source information would be most welcome.
